The Belgian from Omega Pharma-Lotto beat one of the overall contenders, Joaquim Rodriguez, by three seconds as they attacked on the uphill finish at the end of the 157km route along the Mediterranean Coast in sweltering conditions.

Gilbert, winner of the Amstel Gold classic in the spring, leads Katusha’s Rodriguez by 14 seconds overall as overnight leader Mark Cavendish lost a large chunk of time on the big climb of the Puerto del Leon.

A seven man escape group of Blel Kadri (AG2R-La Mondiale), Javier Ramirez (Andalucia), Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel), Jelle Vanendert (Omega Pharma Lotto). Serafin Martinez (Xacobeo Galicia), Niki Terpstra (Milram) and Mickaël Chérel (FDJ) formed inside the opening hour of racing and opened up a lead of over nine minutes.

As they hit the first category climb of the Puerto del León with 53km remaining that advantage had been cut in half and the escapees split on the 15.8km ascent with Serafin Martinez reaching the summit with a lead of just under two minutes on the Liquigas led peloton.

The Xacobeo Galicia rider looked set to hang on for a famous victory but was caught on the 1.75km climb to the finish at the Castillo de Gibralfaro.

The 6% ascent looked like it would suit a punchy Classics-type rider and so it proved as Gilbert roared away to take his second Grand Tour victory after winning stage 20 of the Giro d’Italia last year.

Rodriguez, eighth overall in the Tour de France, finished 10 seconds ahead of Igor Anton with a clutch of overall contenders in Vincenzo Nibali, Grega Bole, Nicolas Roche, Denis Menchov, Ezequiel Mosquera and David Arroyo following close behind with Arthur Vichot completing the top 10.

Sickness in the Team Sky camp saw Britain’s Ben Swift and South African John-Lee Augustyn abandon the race.

There is no doubt that the Russians are catching the golf bug. There are brand new courses popping up all over Moscow and St Petersburg and according to some data, the number of players is expected to grow from 5,000 to 25,000 over the next few years.

Whilst it still may be a niche market, the number of courses being built in Moscow and St Petersburg and the number of players joining the Russian Golf Federation every year speak for themselves.

The cost barrier to join a Russian club for most means that it is less expensive to book through a tour operator and travel to abroad to play. Due to the lack of promotion of Spain in Russia until now, the destination of choice is Belek in Turkey. However, it is the view of many that Spain is of much higher quality and is much more desirable as a destination to most Russian golf enthusiasts.

The challenge for Spain is to get the message through to Moscow that Spain and specifically the Costa del Golf, should be the destination of choice for the travelling Russian golfer.

In October & November, Del Sol Packaged (DSP) will be hosting 2 Golf tournaments specifically aimed at the Russian Golf Tourism market. Timed to coincide with the end of the Russian golf season, both tournaments are being actively promoted through the Russian Golf Clubs and recent collaboration with the Spanish Embassy’s Tourism Department in Moscow has already given a significant boost to the awareness of both competitions throughout Moscow and St Petersburg.

The November tournament is the “Golf Style Cup 2010” and fourteen Invited guests have already confirmed their attendance to this exclusive tournament, open to sponsors only. The guests include the Managing Director of “Golf Style” Magazine as well as senior businessmen from sectors including the Moscow Golf Federation, Oil & Gas, Real Estate & Public Sector utilities. “Golf Style” magazine will run a 6 page feature on the visit experience and the golf tournaments.

DSP’s collaboration with the Spanish Embassy’s Tourism Department has increased the level of interest from this very affluent group of Russian golf enthusiasts. At a recent competition in Moscow in association with the Spanish Tourism department, the winner of the competition was presented with free entry including accommodation to the October tournament, the “DSP Marbella Cup 2010”, which will take place over 2 days at San Roque old and new courses on the 29th and 30th.

Marina Robertson, Managing Director of DSP said “We are very proud to be hosting so many prominent Russian Businessmen and golfers here on the Costa del Sol. This visit marks the start of a new market opportunity for the region as I am sure Russian golf enthusiasts will be very impressed with the standards here”.

The recent success of Spanish sports stars on the Tennis court, football pitch and the number of Spaniards competing for Ryder cup places has created a buzz around the country and a feel good factor that many envy.

The Spanish golf and residential tourism sector has many Russian Nationals interested in taking a serious look at what Spain has to offer them. Once they see, taste and enjoy the lifestyle, they know very quickly that it is tough to beat.

Spain is the most popular destination for retiring Brits looking to move abroad according to new research. The wide range of luxury villas, sun, sea and relaxation are just some of the factors that have put Spain top of the pile.

The study carried out by finance group Standard Life found that Spain was the no.1 choice followed by France, the USA, Canada and Ireland. Spain has plenty of draws for retired Brits with a pleasant year around climate and a large population of English residents, especially around popular coastal regions such as the Costa del Sol.

Moving abroad to retire is a popular choice for many Brits however recent scares centred around the illegal Marbella property ordeal and poor exchange rates have put some retirees off moving to the Costa del Sol. However with such problems now firmly in the past the area is once again becoming a hit with those that are looking to relax and enjoy the finer things in life.

However when moving abroad it’s important that thorough research is carried out, Andrew Tully, Senior Pensions Policy Manager, at Standard Life warned “Retiring abroad is a dream for many people but without careful planning and advice, things can potentially go wrong very quickly.”

Standard Life has advised anyone thinking of moving abroad to check their state pension eligibility, seek independent financial advisor and to inform HM Revenue and Customs.

The best Spanish chefs will meet in the second edition of the “Food & Sun Festival”, which will be hosted by the Gran Melia Don Pepe hotel in Marbella (Malaga), from the 22nd to 24th August.

In addition to gathering more than 400 professionals including chefs, sommeliers, waiters and winemakers, the meeting will feature a lineup of renowned culinary artists. Spanish renowned chefs attending the festival will include Dani García, José Andrés and Andrea Tumbarello.
The event, organized by the city of Marbella, will make it possible to continue betting on the Andalusian city “as a tourist destination and a culinary benchmark of quality “in the living tradition and the avant-garde cuisine.

This year’s novelty will be that the cuisine and golf will come together to bring together different sections of the public at the event ‘Wine & Green’ which is to be held on the 23rd August.
